How We Picked These 11 Free Slider Themes
We shortlisted 17 best free themes that advertise a slider and installed every one on a clean WordPress site with no page builder, no caching plugin, no child theme, no demo import.

Four popular names get recommended constantly in this category and none of them survived testing.
Zakra isn’t here either. It’s a genuinely strong theme – 4.9 stars from 599 ratings, updated 12 days ago – and it belongs on our list of free multipurpose WordPress themes. But I couldn’t find a native slider anywhere in the free build. It expects you to bring Elementor or a plugin, so it doesn’t qualify for this list.
Customizr appears on nearly every list of free WordPress slider themes. It has 30,000+ installs and a 4.8 from 993 ratings – and it hasn’t shipped an update in 608 days, since December 2024. Its slider isn’t broken. It’s just unowned, and that’s a risk you don’t need to take.
Hestia (80,000+ installs, 4.8 stars) would be one of the strongest options here, so I installed it. The front-page hero is static – the slider Hestia advertises is the separate Flat Parallax Slider plugin. That’s a perfectly good setup, but it fails criterion one. Astra (1,000,000+ installs) and Blocksy (300,000+) are faster and better maintained than anything on this list, and neither one ships a slider.
